Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator
The Greenville College athletic department has announced the hiring of Lamar Bell as associate head coach. He is returning to Greenville College after spending the previous three seasons at Bluefield College in Virginia. His positional coaching assignment will include oversight of the offensive skill positions.
Bell, a graduate of High Point University in North Carolina, was previously on Greenville's football staff for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
During his tenure at Bluefield, Bell served as the defensive coordinator and had the opportunity to coach multiple positions. He coached cornerbacks, linebackers, and safeties. Their defense significantly improved. Their points per game allowed in Mid-South Conference East Division games decreased from 55 points in 2014 to 18.8 in 2016.
Off the field, he was heavily involved in recruiting and scholarship decisions. He also served as academic coordinator, highlight video coordinator, and athletic representative on the college's hiring committee.
At Greenville College, he coached defensive backs both seasons. He was promoted from a defensive graduate assistant to assistant head coach after 15 months. He was also part of a coaching staff at Greenville whose teams set a school record with 17 straight wins and the most wins in a single season with nine.
Offensive Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator
Josh Flannery has been on the Greenville University football coaching staff since the 2015 and serves as offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and coaches Quarterbacks. Flannery is a GU graduate who played for the Greenville College football program from 2004-07.
Prior to Greenville, Flannery coached football at Malone University in Canton, Ohio, for five seasons under former Greenville College head coach Eric Hehman. While at Malone, Flannery served his first three years on the offensive side as passing game coordinator and coached the receivers.
In his last two seasons at Malone, Flannery served as Special Teams coordinator and coached on the defensive side of the ball in the secondary.
Flannery has his bachelor’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Greenville College and his Masters degree in Theological Studies (Sports Ministry) from Malone University.
He and his wife Abby (also a 2008 GC graduate) have been married since December 2008, and they have a son named Isaac. They reside in Greenville.

Defensive Line Coach
Rich Stewart returned to Greenville College in 2008 for his third tenure as an assistant football coach. He coaches the defensive line. He previously served as a Greenville College assistant coach for seven seasons from 1987-93 under head coach Max Bowman and two seasons from 2003-04 under head coach Scotty Kessler. He returned to campus in 2008 under head coach Eric Hehman.
Between his stints at Greenville College, he was head football coach at Hillsboro High School where he accumulated a 87-38 overall record in 12 seasons. He led the Hiltoppers to nine IHSA playoff appearances from 1994-02 and 2005-07. Stewart holds a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Southeast Missouri State University. He resides in Hillsboro, Ill., with his wife Margie, and they have two adult children, Jason and Jennifer.
